Babette Cole is one of the most famous Children's Authors/Illustrators living today.
Published by Random House Children's Books, Egmont and Puffin Books in the U.K. and many other publishers worldwide, her work has been translated into 75 different languages, and some of her books have sold over a million copies.
Having written and illustrated over 70 books, her most famous stories include "Dr Dog", "Princess Smartypants" and "Mummy Laid an Egg"
( Brit Award 1998) all now considered as children's classics.
Having formerly lived in Africa and the West Indies, Babette has lived in Dorset for the last four years.
Well know for her funny, witty, unconventional approach to children's picture books, she is one of the world's best loved authors.
Babette uses a mixture of water colour die, pastel, pencil, crayon dash, and oil pastels when illustrating, and creates fun and educational stories that have captured the imaginations of children around the world.
The first book which she wrote and illustrated was "Promise Solves The Problem" in 1976. She considers that visual images and the written word are of equal importance in children's books, and that illustrations are key to getting younger children interested in reading.
Babette believes that a passion for books, art and literature in general starts from a very early age and should be promoted and encouraged as soon as possible. Alarmingly 20% of children are leaving school without any reading skills due to too much exposure to computers and not enough encouragement to read and enjoy books.
Babette's work has been televised on the BBC and many other T.V. Channels internationally. She has drawn for Jackanory, Bagpuss and Basil Brush having started in her early days with Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate.
She is currently working on her first adult novel, having already been in talks with film producers about the story.
Her famous picture book, 'Dr Dog' is also being made into a T.V. series and will feature on the Discovery Channel in 2006.
She is currently producing a new Dr Dog (Doctor Dog Goes Green) for Random House, a new Princess Smartypants for Puffin and four hilarious pony novels for Bloomsbury.
Babette is also running a series of workshops and lectures on how to write and illustrate Children's Picture Books. Her d.v.d. on the subject is in great demand and can be purchased from
